Universidad Andrés Bello is committed to saving energy on a daily basis. Carrying out this type of environmentally conscious practices and the fight against climate change helps to improve energy consumption rates at our sites and campuses. Check this page for more of our projects.
In 2012, Universidad Andrés Bello pioneered the use of solar energy by installing a Photovoltaic Solar Energy System in Campus Casona, which reached a second stage in 2013 with a power of 80 kW.
During 2019 UNAB migrated to open client in part of its facilities. Then in 2020, thanks to the acquisition of renewable energy certificates, 24% of UNAB’s electricity consumption was acquired from renewable sources this doubled by 2021 reaching approximately 40%.
The university is currently preparing a diagnosis and energy management plan as part of the sustainability strategy, with the purpose of identifying critical consumption points, energy efficiency measures and sustainable consumption habits that will allow the reduction of energy consumption at UNAB.
Previous Work
The first tasks performed were of great importance for the recognition and determination of the major existing consumptions in the UNAB campuses:
From the diagnosis carried out at the UNAB campuses, it was detected that the energy consumptions with the highest consumption are:
Electricity
Fossil fuels
Biomass
According to the diagnosis carried out, it was possible to determine some systems with higher consumption where we can work to reduce them:
Air Conditioning System
Chiller System
Pumping Systems
Boiler System
Lighting System
In order to achieve significant savings in energy consumption, a number of measures were proposed and have been implemented to date:
Remarkable installation
The purpose of this measure is to record the electricity consumption of the loads with the highest significant energy use in order to verify or establish a baseline measurement of the energy consumed and thus implement the various opportunities for improving electricity in a focused and efficient manner.
A total of 249 redialers are being installed at eight of our campuses, distributed as follows:
Lighting Sensorization
This equipment has a light sensor and a motion sensor that turn on or off depending on the quantification of the luminosity of the place and the detection of motion, it is a measure of great visual impact.
Objective:
Control the switching on/off of luminaires in common areas by not leaving this measure in the hands of the users.
Make the most of natural light in common spaces.
By combining this measure with long-life, energy-saving LED-type luminaires, savings are increased by using them efficiently, and the useful life of the equipment is increased.
Sensors are installed in 5 of the 8 campuses as surveyed in the UNAB Energy Management Diagnosis with a total of 315 sensors distributed as follows:
